I am so excited! We are moving up in the world! Now, not only can you login to the card catalog and access your account from home, you can also get emails reminding you to login and renew your books. Currently on the card catalog you can request items, renew items, check the status of your holds, and check to see if you have any fines or notes on your card. Now, as long as you registered for your card at Auburndale or a participating location, you can also get pre-overdue notices, overdue notices, or hold notifications through email. A pre-overdue notice sends you a reminder 3 days before your books are due. Overdue notices let you know that you are accumulating fines. Hold notices let you know if an item is waiting for you to pick-up. If this sounds like something you would like, just let us know and with a few clicks of the mouse, ta-day, it is done! I believe we have come a long way from the where our technology was 16 years ago when I started working here, but, that's another story for another day.

PLEASE HELP!!! AS OCCURRING IN SO MANY AREAS OF THE GOVERNMENT, LIBRARY FUNDING IS GOING TO BE CUT, UNLESS YOU CAN HELP. THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION CAME FROM AN EMAIL I RECEIVED THAT IS BEING PASSED ON TO ALL LIBRARY DIRECTORS IN POLK COUNTY AND ACROSS THE STATE.

FLA Legislative Alert

Legislature will convene in Tallahassee January 5 to determine how to deal with a projected $2.3 billion mid-year revenue shortfall. They will be looking at changes to the current budget for the year ending June 30, 2009.

Background - In mid-December, House and Senate appropriations committees met in Tallahassee and began their deliberations by looking at options and on December 23rd, Governor Crist published his recommendations for how the state should respond.

The House and Senate Transportation and Economic Development Committees, those with primary responsibility for the funding of library programs in the Department of State budget, discussed State Aid to Public Libraries cuts ranging from $2.8 to $3.9 million because they were looking primarily at cuts, not additional revenues. The Governor’s recommended State Aid cut is $1.06 million, or 4% of the current $26.7 appropriation, part of a 4% across the board hold-back implemented earlier in the year.

FLA is advising library advocates to support the Governor’s proposed reduction. Arguing against any reductions in these budget circumstances would not be reasonable. There will be cuts; our objective is to keep them as small as possible.

Action Needed - It is important for Florida library advocates to contact their legislators before the January 5 Special Session. It is especially important for those advocates represented by members of the House and Senate Transportation and Economic Development Committees (below) to get the message to their legislators.

The Message - Support the Governor’s proposed $1.06 million reduction for State Aid to Public Libraries.

Sample Message for Legislators - The message below is provided to help library advocates communicate with their legislators. Remember, it is always good to “localize” your message and to provide real life stories about how issues affect your library and community.

And Above All – Keep It Positive! - Legislators are in a very, very difficult position. Our approach is to treat them with respect so that we build long term friends and champions!

Dear _____ (Representative, Senator, or Governor)

We understand the state is facing the worst budget challenges in modern times and we respect the fact that you will have to make difficult decisions and that no area will be exempt from cuts. We ask that you support the Governor’s proposed $1.06 million reduction to the State Aid to Public Libraries Program rather than the larger cuts of $2.8 and $3.9 proposed to the Senate and the House.

We ask that as you go about your deliberations, that you stay mindful of the benefits Floridians receive from Florida libraries – especially during difficult economic times like these.

§ Florida Libraries Help Residents Get Jobs! Libraries provide services and information to help people find job postings, prepare resumes, and submit online applications.

§ Florida Libraries Help Government Deliver Services! Libraries are the only provider of free Internet access in their communities and the place to go to access e-government services.

§ Florida Libraries Play a Critical Role in Kids’ Learning! – Libraries help young children learn to read and help parents and caregivers learn to be their children’s first teachers. Children and families benefit from homework assistance programs, tutoring, support for homeschoolers, and casual library experience. Teens benefit from a safe environment for reading, computers, games and a place to socialize with adult supervision.

I know that sometimes using new software can be a pain. I am fairly good at giving directions, so if you need help with any of the library databases, website, or card catalog, please let me know. There are several things for which I already have directions created. You can access the card catalog online. You can request items to be sent to the library of your choice. You can see what you have checked out or any notes on your card. You can even renew items. The databases are wonderful. Poke through them and see what we have!

Back to School Bash - Family Fun Time

DVD Policy

I have just changed our DVD policy. DVD's did go out for 2 days with 1 renewal, totaling 4 days. Now they will go out for 7 days with no renewal. This will also allow them to be checked out from or returned to any library. Let me know what you think about the new policy.

Library's New Look

August 4th through the 9th we were closed for inventory. We scanned every item in the building and put every book exactly where it belongs. Yes, we were ther every day working hard! During that time we also got new carpet in the adult section. Since all the shelves were being moved around anyway, I decided to change the look of the library. We moved 8 computers closer to the front desk to make it easier for people to get help. We rotated the reference collection so we could see down the aisles. We spread the shelves out. We even created a seating area in the large print section. I think that the library looks more open and regains that friendly feel that it had when it was first built. Have you seen the changes? What a wonderful time! The kids seemed to have great fun! We disected owl pellets. Every child got make music with the drums. The entertainer was absolutely wonderful. I never new playing the drums was so easy. Yes I did it and the pictures are proof. I hope everyone had a great time at the programs this year. I don't know if I enjoyed the owl pellets or the drumming the most. What was your favorite part?

Whether it be from our childhood or our adult years, many of us had a book that we really love.

Tell us a little about your favorite book. What made it so special?

I love The Devil's Arithmetic by Lois Lowry. I lived in Germany for 3 years when I was very young. While we were there, a series was on television about the Holocaust. So, I learned about genocide and the horrors of the Holocaust at a very young age. It was not until college that I finally read The Devil's Arithmetic. It immediately struck a cord with me. I cried through several parts. I hate to cry but the book is so well written that I couldn't put it down. Of course, I know that the facts in the book, what things were really like, were accurate. Lois Lowry (or staff) really did her (or their) research. It just really touched me. I have read it about 3 times now, even though it is considered a juvenile chapter book.

My favorite fun book is The Royal Pain by Mary JaniceDavidson. I laughed so hard when I read it! I had stopped reading for fun because I was getting my Master's degree. This book not only relieved my stress, but also re-instilled my joy for reading.

National Library Week

National Library Week was a huge success. We had about 350 people attend the kickoff on Sat. We also had more than 300 register for baskets. If you visited the library during NLW, let me know what you thought about it! By the way, we had 64,501 items the day of the contest. Only 1 person even got close to guessing it!!!

National Library Week

It's that time again, National Library Week. Officially, the week runs from April 13th through April 19th. However, some of the library staff is participating in Relay for Life on April 19th. Therefore, we will have the HUGE outdoor kickoff on April 12th. There will be food and drinks for sale, games, crafts, a kids book givaway, and more!!!! From Monday through Friday we will have something different going on each day.

Saturday - Kickoff
Monday - Giveaway Day (small gifts such as key chains, suckers, mints, and unique bookmarks will be available at the front desk)
Tuesday - Guess how many items are in the library. The person who gets the closest to the number generated before opening Tuesday will get a prize. The winner will be announced at 4:00.
Wednesday - Late fine removal. Yes, you read it correctly. All late fees will be removed for anyone who comes in and asks.
Thursday - We will be serving coffee, juice, and mini muffins from 9-12.
Friday - Basket Drawing (All week long patrons can put their names in a box for a chance to win a basket of goodies. )

Have you ever thought about starting a reading group. Here at the library we get questions about it all the time. Unfortunately, we don't have the staff to conduct one ourselves. We do however try to keep our eyes out for anything that would be helpful. I was sent an email today about a new website specifically for reading groups. The author was asking me to take a peek at it and share the information with others if I thought it seemed helpful. Well, it did. There are tips on how to start, conduct, and purchase items for reading groups. There are even free online courses and guides to provide you with what you need to make informed decisions. I believe this will be a helpful tool to those who would like to start a reading group. Family Fun Time - Up Up and Away Interactive Science Show

The Auburndale Library is hosting another Family Fun Time event on January 31, 2008 from 3:30-4:30. This unique event will be located at the Auburndale Woman's Club across the street from the library. Up Up and Away Interactive Science Show is a science-themed show designed to amaze and entertain young audiences. It is designed for ages 5-12, but can be fun for the whole family. Afterward, children will be given the chance to conduct their own science experiment! Come join us for this wonderful event!

New Young Adult Section!!

We are in the process of creating a young adult non-fiction section at the library. I have ordered a bunch of items for it, but I am not a young adult and I don't presume to know what teenagers today want. You could really help us out. If there is a non-fiction book that we have, or one you wish we had, that you think would be great for our new section just let me know. You could make this section the best in the library just by letting me know what you think. Don't have titles, but like certain subjects or authors, that's great too. Any input is welcome. Make a difference at your library!

I am also looking to improve the fiction young adult section. If you have any suggestions, they are greatly appreciated.

I hope everyone has a safe and happy Thanksgiving.
Just to bust the Thanksgiving myth and maybe help some of you with your next trivia game, no the tryptophan in turkey does not make you sleepy. Purified tryptophan is a mild sleep-inducing agent, but it does not function well as part of a meal. Eating foods containing it may cause blood levels of the amino acid to rise, but not enough will get to the brain to make you sleepy. Tryptophan needs to be taken on an empty stomach and without any other amino acids or protein to make you sleepy. The fact is that soybeans even have a higher concentration of tryptophan than turkey does. Plain old overeating alone can make you sleepy. It takes lots of energy to digest a large meal. When your stomach is full, blood is directed away from your other organs, including your nervous system, to your digestive system. This will make you feel tired, especially if the meal was high in fats and carbohydrates. There are other reasons you will get tired after a Thanksgiving meal, but I will leave you to research that yourself.
I hope you all enjoy your meals. When your laying down to take your nap or snoozing at half-time, take a moment to think about what you are thankful for, even if it is just that you have a full stomach. Happy Thanksgiving!!

The outdoor movie was great! It started to rain and we thought we would have to cancel, but at the last minute it quit. About 80 people showed up and enjoyed the popcorn, drinks, and movie. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. If you attended it, I would love to hear your input.

Reading is Fundamental (RIF)

This is a really great website. Check out the RIF Reading Planet. Right now they are featuring the Reading Planet Powwow. There is a "Story Tent", "Food and Games Table", and "Dance Circle". November is National American Indian Heritage Month so check it out at http://www.rif.org . One section is for ages 0-5. The other is for ages 6-15. There are also a lot of interesting items for parents and educators.

Family Fun Time - Outdoor Movie

The Auburndale Library will be hosting another FAMILY FUN TIME event. November 15th, we will be showing a movie outside!! Come enjoy free popcorn and drinks while you watch Beethoven's 4th outside. Bring your chairs and/or blankets. THE EVENT IS FREE SO BRING YOUR WHOLE FAMILY AND INVITE ALL YOUR FRIENDS!!!! This movie is rated G so it is good for all ages. Let me know what you think of this event.

November Closures

We will be closed Nov. 12, 2007 in observance of Veteran's Day. We will also be closed Nov. 22nd and Nov. 23rd to celebrate Thanksgiving. I hope you all are able to enjoy the holidays!

Mailing List

We are in the process of creating mailing lists for programs. There will be two program listings, adult and children. To be added to the listing please put "adult program mailing list" in the subject line and send it to wmccarty@pclc.lib.fl.us or "children's program mailing list" in the subject line and send it to yvonne@pclc.lib.fl.us. Whenever there is a program coming up, we will send out an email to anyone in the list. Programs may include author talks, book signings, puppet shows, family fun events, tax help, craft days, etc. If you ever choose to be removed from the list, just send an email to the list master with "remove from mailing list" in the subject line. If you choose to provide a reason, that would be helpful since this is a new service and we are constantly looking for ways to improve on it. I hope you will find this new service helpful.

Savings Calculator

I received a very interesting email the other day. On the State Library and Archives of Florida website there is a personal savings calculator. On this site, you can plug in how many books, movies, audios, etc. that you checkout from the library. You can also plug in how many times you use the computers, meeting room, or how many programs you attend. After you have entered the information, it will calculate the value of your library use. In other words, how much you would pay out-of-pocket for your library services if there was a charge. I played with it a little bit and it is really neat! In a vast underestimate of what I actually use, the value was $3,108. There is a link that lets you know how the figures were calculated so you know whether the amounts used are reasonable. Try it out and let me know what you think!

Children's Programs

It's that time of year again! On Wednesday mornings the parking lots are full. Children with smiling faces are walking into the library. Glue covers the tables and glitter covers the carpet. That's right. It is children's story hour at the Auburndale Library. Kids come to the library to do a craft, listen to stories, watch puppet shows, and dance to the music. Yvonne, Mickie, the kids, and accompanying adults all have a great time. Children learn how to interact with each other, develop friendships, and learn skills that will help them once they start school. They have a great time and don't realize how much they are learning. Come check it out!

Family Fun Time at the Library

We are going to try to start having Family Fun Time at the library. One day a month we will have a special activity that is different from our normal programming. We are discussing programs like outdoor movies, craft day, puppet shows, and guest speakers. We are really excited but are in the beginning stages of development. The programs will be free to whoever would like to attend. We are trying to come up with programs that will be good for the whole family. They will be geared a little bit more towards children because right now that is what we are used to doing and adults can do younger activities easier than kids can do older activities.

Our first scheduled program is October 20th. October is Drug Prevention Month and we will be hosting a puppet show on self-esteem. We hope to see you there!
